It is important that all students attend Day 1 and 2 classes on Thursday, June 24 and Friday, June 25. This will be the last opportunity for students to review their marks prior to the distribution of final report cards on June 30.
Students are reminded to allow extra time for travel to the school due to the security measures in place for the G20 summit.
Teachers have been asked to be flexible about arrival times and asked to share marks when the student arrives.
See you all on June 24th and June 25th! |

COPS, KIDS TAKE FLIGHT
A School Resource Officer (SRO) helped students put classroom theories into action, making their dreams take flight through an aviation program that piqued their interest in flying.
On May 15, Community Response Unit (CRU) officers joined a group of kids from Northern Secondary School and the Thorncliffe Park neighbourhood for Junior Aviators Day at the Buttonville Airport.
The all-expense paid trip came courtesy of the Buttonville Flying Club (BFC), the largest North American Chapter of the Canadian Owners and Pilots Association (COPA). The mission of the “COPA for Kids” aviation program is to get kids interested in a career in the air or, on the ground, in aeronautics.
CRU Sgt. Matthew Mungal said the kids took away an interest in aviation after the 20-minute flights with their newfound police friends.
“They can look back on a very positive experience, learning about aviation, talking about being an engineer, designing airplanes, pilots, flight-control tower and mechanics,” Mungal said, of learning the fundamentals of flight, from 2,000 feet above the city.
“There is no doubt in my mind, talking to the kids afterwards, that a few will get involved in aviation.”
Northern School Resource Officer Const. Ali Moosvi said the outing allowed the officers and kids to get to know each other a little better.
“Allowing kids to get out of the school environment and, be a part of something exciting, lends credibility to seeing police officers, not just as an authoritarian figure, but a community member with a stake in the community.”

Northern’s SMARTRISK peer leadership team participated in Project Ignition this past fall, an international contest sponsored by State Farm Insurance. The school was selected as one of five Canadian schools to receive a $2000 grant to cover the cost of running activities to promote teen driver safety awareness. Emma Henderson, Hannah Kraicer-Melamed, and Charlie Prussky co-ordinated a number of events, including the MADD Canada assembly “Wasted”, a resource fair, locker painting, and a distracted driving competition. Northern S.S. has been chosen as the Canadian winner and will be given $6000 U.S. to facilitate team leaders attending The National Youth Leadership Conference in San Jose, California in March. They will showcase their work at the conference and have the opportunity to participate in a number of workshops and leadership activities. Staff advisors Karen McIntyre and Stefan Banjevic are extremely proud of the efforts of the SMARTRISK team in raising awareness around injury prevention. |
